Future of Sex: 2018 Predictions

Gypsy holding her hands around a crystal ball to predict what will happen in the year ahead

Every year some new (or not so new) sexual practice or lifestyle becomes the talk of the town and suddenly every Cosmo sealed section and internet sex blog is telling you about the latest “must-do” sex craze. The 70s and 80s brought us Tantra and swinging, rabbit vibrators became the in-vogue sex-essory after a Sex and the City episode, and I don’t think anyone in the world missed the memo that BDSM was all the rage with the release of a certain book. While I love the idea that more and more people are exploring new things and discovering their bodies I do take issue with certain fads that come around (I’m looking at you, Gwyneth Paltrow, with your dumb vagina steaming and dangerously porous jade eggs) and will always encourage people to do further research and get real, professional advice when wanting to try new things. Especially if it involves putting anything inside your body… But over-all I think the fact that the world is opening up its mind and exploring its sexuality can only be a good thing, so here are my predictions for what I reckon will be the latest and greatest sexy-things for the new year.

Sex Tech Explosion

2017 was a big year for sex tech. Because of improved technology, more accessibility and far more affordability there was a huge increase in people using computer science to enhance their sex lives.

From remote access toys connected to Bluetooth, to virtual reality porn, to the much talked about and debated realism of sex robots, science and technology really has settled itself into place in the sex world. I reckon 2018 is going be even bigger, better and ready to show the world that sex tech is less about sleazy sex robots and more about creating positive experiences and connections for everyone. New products and innovative inventions will bring sex and sexual pleasure that much closer to huge sections of the community who have often been left out of these conversations. Toys for the elderly and disabled that can be used with little to no mobility, toys to help not only enhance the sex life of trans people, but to work with their bodies and help combat dysmorphia and other body concerns that can arise. While we still have a long way to go, general attitudes to sex and sexual people is definitely becoming more positive and inclusive and the more positive our attitudes towards sex, the more positive the changes in the world of sex toys and technology will be. I see a future filled with amazing biotech prosthetics, and incredible long distance, virtual reality, 3D holographic experiences with your overseas lover… But for now, in 2018, I see a lot of mutually satisfying, all-accessible, super high-tech sexy fun for all people, all sexualities and all genders.

Coregasms

Every year a new health and fitness trend sweeps in and takes over the gyms and workout DVD market. It’s not a new thing, Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda and the Jazzercise craze blew in in a flurry of fluoro leotards and leg-warmers and there’s been a steady succession of fitness fads ever since. There’s boxercise and Thai Bo and Zumba and pole dancing and Les Mills classes and outdoor group fitness boot-camps. And let’s not forget Bikram and Pilates and Cross-fit… But the newest one that is apparently taking the workout rooms to new and rather delicious places is the practice of core-gasming… The training of the body to achieve orgasms through controlled core and muscle movements. Closely related to coregasm exercise is yogasm, which is basically the same thing but with more yoga. Although I think it will be a while before your local Fernwood offers them as part of their class program, more and more independent teachers, often with backgrounds in Tantra other spiritual sexual lifestyles are adding the sessions to their classes. Seriously though, if anything can improve how horrible sit-ups and crunches are, I’m in!

Proper Informed Consent

If 2017 taught us anything it’s that women are fed up with the world’s lack of understanding about consent. Try and bring it up in most public forums and you get shouted down by all the “nice guys who aren’t rapists” further proving the lack of understanding, and shutting down the conversation before it’s even started. The sheer volume of women and men responding to the #MeToo movement was the start of a long-overdue wakeup call to everyone to re-examine what we think consent is and   the snowball is only growing. While the tail end of 2017 dragged it’s feet muttering “What? Can’t I even smile at a woman now?” the rest of us are looking excitedly towards 2018 and the change we can feel in the wind, starting conversations and trying to relearn and understand properly how to make the world a safer, more inclusive, more respectful place for everyone.

So there you have it AMMers. I have looked into the crystal ball and have seen the future of sex!! Or at least a few cool new things that will definitely be interesting to watch. What new sex trends have you heard of that you think will gain more traction this year? We’d love to hear your thoughts and predictions in our comment section!

How interesting. Consent. Sometimes we are not clear what our own boundaries are and for me I’ve needed to get out of my comfort zone to realise them. I’m also getting so much more aware of what makes me cum embarrassed to say I’ve been way too focused on the other’s pleasure at the expense of my own. No more. To be a good hedonist it is a wonderful thing to be focussed on another’s pleasure but also to be in touch with your own. Im constantly learning and that is the beautiful luxury of getting it on with several delicious men...

    Interesting,
Yogasm must be the reason Mrs Z has increased her going to Yoga to 2 - 3 times per week.
Informed consent is a much more difficult problem and from our experience is something that to a lessor or greater degree the BDSM scene seems to get whereas the Swingers sometimes don't. That said we have never personally experienced a No not being understood and respected from either group. We have no issue with people making an approach as long as respectful and they understand that Mrs Z holds the consent card.
2018 - I hope is one of new discoveries, new friends, having more time for learning (Rope, Tantra etc) and enjoying our newfound freedoms (Sans small children. lol).

Well done AMM on such work re the fake profile crackdown...if I could suggest perhaps every standard member needing to pay a one off $10 fee for verification (and offer paypal as well as an option) that would not only assist on the crackdown but also AMM re future server upgrades as well?

I don't think a one of $10 fee well discourage fakes from creating profiles. What we need is mandatory verification and profiles that have been inactive for six months to be deleted unless payed up. But they won't because then they can't claim the numbers it's all about numbers and money.

While toys and gadgets are not our thing, its interesting to hear informed consent to be coming to the fore front. Over the years when we rarely find someone on a similar page, women have seemingly be taken by surprise with being deeply considered and respected, and included in what unfolds, and consent doesn't stop at the first kiss :-). We agree that true consent is a growing and are inspired by what Betty Martin has been doing with her "wheel of consent" to help people understand more.

We'll have to look into Coregasms LOL .... it does make sense since the condition of the core muscle group - the psoas is directly related to our orgasmic capacity :-)

With consent and maybe a better understanding of how bodies work, just maybe, and another prediction could be on the table, where there will be a greater desire for more presence, more sensual eroticism, greater orgasmic sensitivity that lead to feeling fulfilled on multiple levels throughout the body. Who knows, we can hope, right ? :-)

Very thought provoking. While I am not game to predict where technology is likely to take us, I would be happy for community attitudes to focus around three issues: informed consent, sexuality and disability and intimacy for seniors.

    Great article (as always).
    Thought-provoking, and more-essentially: "current"!

As for consensual sex: Both I and FoxDen.AustWide are a HUGE advocate for the sanctity of consent from the female (or Non-binary, or Male) to allow us to orchestrate what they have asked us to have happen to/with their bodies, with regards to a 'fantasy-request' or set-up, along the lines of what is offered on the profile.

Gone are the days (hopefully) of anyone, regardless of age, race or more importantly gender, being afraid to ask a Group to organise a particular fantasy that is dear to their heart, with the age-group that they want, with the body-&personality-types that they want; without feeling that they are a lesser being (24/7) and not someone who deserves respect at ALL times, no matter how 'kinky-or-slutty' their particular fantasy or sexual desire is.

Too many times I have listened both online and in typed messages on AMM, (as well as over the phone), to females of all ages, (not just young ones) who have 'believed' the garbage that was told to them by (mainly) guys who just wanted a root; .....or 'pseudo' (fake) Doms (guys posing as experienced male dominants) who told them that to be a submissive, they had to come in, strip off, and subject themselves to anything (& everything) the so-called 'Dom' directed them to do or allow to happen to them, without question or cessation............which is SO NOT how it is meant to happen!!! (And if you want an explanation of that, feel free to wink or message me on this profile.)

So....even being a male...my hope is that the 'other' males out there who currently have very antiquated ideals about how to 'relate-to' people of the opposite gender(s), will take heed of what's happening out there in the big, (bad) wonderful world; and not 'try-it-on' with a willing, but inexperienced female (*) just because he believes his brand of **bs** might get him laid at least once (or twice).

FYI we banned almost 5k fake profiles in 2017 and requested another 1k profiles to verify before we would allow them to access the site again. A considerable amount of support staff's time is devoted to reviewing profiles. We are a very successful site and that means we can become a target. But we're committed to genuine profiles and are proud of our track record. Yes a few might slip through initially but that's when we rely on our members to use the Report Member feature as sometimes their intent isn't obviously until they start communicating with genuine members. And we're quite confident you wouldn't find another adult site as diligent about removing fake members as we are, after all it bumps up the stats. But what point is there in that if they're not genuine. Keep in mind we were the first Australian site to introduce a verification feature and we restrict validations to genuine members. And if you have any concerns that a member is using photos which don't belong to them or that they're not genuine please use the Report Member feature as reports are prioritised in the support queue.

I can vouch for that - I have reported dodgy profiles a few times and AMM support has always acted swiftly. I think that the guys who complain about "fake profiles" are just suffering from a case of sour grapes - just because a woman doesn't respond to you doesn't mean her profile is fake.

Well well Leolady,I’ll leave the personal attacks to you, as I’ve never approached or spoken to you in any public or private forum or social setting your comments about “sour grapes” are quite ill considered and show a distinct lack of social etiquette that should be concerning, obviously hold yourself out as self righteous judge of others and their social appeal.
My comment was just a wish for no fakes, now I’ll add on to that, self righteous ignorant know all’s as well.
By the way I also report suspected fakes as well which are promptly dealt with.

Both 50 shades and the metoo movement was conjured to further divide the people. It has given us nothing but separation, correct? Sure maybe you feel connected to other "victims" but bigger rivaling forces are at work because of this.

If you want man and woman to be equal, you can't demand anyone to change their beliefs. You just have to accept them as men continually have done with women. Just open your eyes and realise that men are superior in the physical world. BUT women are far more superior in their ability to manipulate man for their advantages, because most men are mere animals without much developed consciousness.

Hey I'm not here to argue with you, it's time to shed some light in the darkness. My belief is quite the contrary, that I've not fallen prey to social programming. I've woken up, and I can objectively observe the issues surrounding the globe.

To defend your accusation of my personality; I'm very compassionate, vegetarian and non judgmental. I'm just vibrating on another frequency than you mate.

But men are not superior in the physical world. In an 'Iron Man' competition in a club I belonged to years ago, the ultimate winner was a young, slender female, who's slight body showed no signs of muscle, but she beat all the 'manly' guys in the water-ski club. And I have witnessed similar in other areas of my life. So, you need to pull your head out of the sand....(and maybe pull it in a bit too).

Yes! Females are biologically more enhanced than men when it comes to endurance, this because they have a lot more slow twitch muscle fibers than fast twitch muscle fibers. But endurance and power are not the same.

I feel so surprised to be met with such hate instead of love, aren't we all from the same? I feel that it's very shallow to judge and reject someone only because of their beliefs.

      Thank you for reading

Not for publication... An observation... Perhaps in 2018/19 a dating site will invest in some artificial intelligence to actually help customers find what they need rather than what they (often stupidly) think they want. Both "hahahaha" and "hint hint hint". :-)
