Bald is the New Black

Close up of a sexy man's bald head

Great news for the folically challenged. Yep, researchers have confirmed that balding men are leading the way when it comes to sex appeal. Bald really is the new black!

So ageing sucks, right! You might be financially better off, be a little wiser and little more worldly but then it takes a couple of days to recover from an all night party (if you have the energy to stay past midnight), the person looking back at you in the mirror is definitely showing signs of having a dad bod and then there’s losing your hair.

In the years before men bravely took to razors and clippers when their receding hairline threatened to overcome gravity, comb overs, hair pieces and weird Friar Tuck style hair dos were the norm. Of course Donald Trump has tried to make the comb-over trendy again but the New York Post reports that even daughter Ivanka Trump often makes fun of her dad's comb-over to friends. Yes balding men were the subject of late night jokes and pity from those men who defiantly sported glossy locks well into their 50s and 60s. But no more. What used to signify aging and hair loss now signifies a sexy hunk of maleness.

Of course the cause of balding men has been boosted by sexy bald men in the media such as Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, Patrick Stewart & Kelly Slater who all ooze sex appeal! Check out the casting of dominant male characters in films and it confirms that bald is a winner at the box office.

The Australian Institute of Hair Restoration publishes US statistics which show 40% of men will have noticeable signs of hair loss or male pattern baldness by the time they hit 35. The percentage grows to 65% by the time they hit 60. And surgical hair restoration is a whopping $1.9 billion industry.

It turns out shaving your head can be one of the most liberating and empowering things you can do, because apparently, bald dudes are perceived as more intelligent, dominant, and overall sexier than men who have a full head of hair.

But let’s get onto the juicy research findings.

Firstly Dr. Frank Muscarella from Barry University in Florida. In his study, Muscarella and his team asked participants to rate a selection of men in four domains: physical attractiveness, aggressiveness, appeasement, and social maturity, which included factors like honesty, intelligence, and social status. The study found bald men are thought to be more socially mature, intelligent, educated and honest compared with men who have a full head of hair.

The results showed men with a full head of hair had the lowest ratings of social maturity, the men with receding hair higher, and bald men the highest. To put the findings in perspective, physical attractiveness was down a little in this study but it was definitely outweighed by the other categories.

Muscarella told the Daily Mail; “Studies have shown baldness in men is seen as a non-threatening form of social dominance. There is a large body of literature that shows that although women like physically attractive men, they are also very attracted to signs of high social dominance.”

More recently, Dr Muscarella conducted an unpublished study, which showed that there was no correlation between the amount of baldness a man exhibited and the number of sexual partners he had over his life. While this does not necessarily show balding men attracted more women, it does suggest the baldness is not a barrier to men attracting women.

And then a second study conducted by Albert E. Mannes at the University of Pennyslvania looked at the perception of men with and without hair. The study used photographs of four men with hair and photographs of the same men with their hair digitally removed. The research results found men who shaved their head slightly more masculine than men with a full head of hair. They were also viewed as more confident and dominant.

The takeaway here is that if your hair is thinning bite the bullet and shave it off. Yes it’s a bold move and a beanie might be required if you live in Melbourne or Hobart but you will reap the rewards when it comes to sex appeal.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel with this topic, it's irrelevant. A guy can blow my socks off with or without hair. But a smart arse , loud mouthed pushy mf will loose my interest every time, no matter what he's got growing on upstairs. Oh and guys that say they only want shaved pussy, that's just childish unless they have a thing for 12 yr old girls it's nice to mix things up a bit.

That's your reasoning behind it ?. Keep going then, women in this group are watching and I'm sure we would like to know how it is more hygienic. Don't get me wrong I'm not for or against it. I'm against the fact that its expected. Never in the history of frigging ever have any of my friends said "oh the dr said I have to shave my snatch because it's hygenic", and trust me we talk about this stuff. Feel free to jump on line and do a little research before you get back to us on this because we are ready. And you might want to try a reason that has some actual facts attached.

I am quickly thinning in the standard male pattern baldness progression, and other older men in my family are all but bald on top. However an interstate "friend" of mine has suggested I look a little like Bruce Willis especially after a close haircut (head only, not the body). I'll take whatever I can get :)

I am stylish now? Wow! I didn't really start to lose much till 41. I clipped it to a #4 and slowly decreased it to a #1 clippers. 20 years later! I am always clean and tidy, I am not quite bald, I don't care! Don't own a comb or a brush! Can scrub my head everyday, wash my hair, and dry it in 15 seconds on a bad day! My joke is when people look at me with my attitude is ask if I parted my hair on the wrong side? Sexy comes from within, just not the surface people can see.

    Soooooo,
All of those emails that claim a full head of hair is the secret to getting it on are lying.

    So good to know.

I always thought it was how you carried yourself in mixed company that determined your success.

    Silly me

True! I started to bald and have started cutting my hair very short (almost clean shave). Was wondering if women would like the style and yes! Nearly every woman I met complimented me on the bald appearance.

So, bald is hot now, great... Still trying to figure out what goes into being tall dark & handsome. But if me going bald and me accepting the fact of going bald, by continuing to be bald makes me hot, than who cares what dark means, just replace that with bald, problem solved ;)

I've had a number of lovers who had little or no hair and I had no problem with it. I must admit, though, if one is being superficial a full head of hair is always attractive. As far as vulvas (which immature people might refer to as "pussies"), I'm happy with hairy or shaved, but a man who insists on hairless is not worth bothering about.

Can totally relate to these studies.
When you lose your hair, especially at a young age, you do tend to take stock of your life and become less vain - this in turn allows you to develop your personality traits. I have mates who are both bald and have hair, and after reading this article realised that for the most part, the shaved head guys seem to have more confidence and are better adjusted socially than some of my full headed hair mates - never really thought about it till now.

Always a little weary of "studies" but the positive feedback from the ladies is encouraging.
I have just developed Alopecia Areata, which is an auto-immune desease that attacks the hair folicles for no good reason, resulting in patchy rapid hair loss. In the space of 4-6 weeks ive gone from having a good head of hair and beloved goatee to looking like a chemo patient. I'll shave it all off shortly and rock the Kojac. Not the end of the world, just a little shitty it being so rapid. My profile will soon have some new pics ;-)
    Enjoyed the article.

I have a big weakness for a bald/shaved head on a man. Especially with a short beard or stubble. But it’s the total package that attracts me.

Well said "It's the total package that attracts me".
I shouldn't go with all the standard bald jokes, "solar panel for a sex machine", "grass doesn't grow on a busy street", "Most men use their testosterone to grow hair; bald men put it to better use", "Be careful when you rub it; I get taller", "I live life in the fast lane and my hair just couldn't keep up!!" but it might seem like justification because I'm bald.
Anyway I've had more positive comments about baldness than negative. Having a sense of humour and lightening up helps . . . hmmm lightening up . . . is that another bald joke?

I've never worried about my head hair, it started to thin rapidly in my late 20s but my beard didn't start to thin out till my 60s. And in any case, I'm always a little sus about "studies".

I've had a heap of lovers in my lifetime and it has always surprised me that a large number of them have always found my hands sexy. I was never given a reason until recently when a I was told by a lover that I use them when I talk in the same way as when I play guitar.

You work it out, I can't.

True story - Patrick Stewart almost didn’t get the part as Captain Picard. Gene Roddenberry asked Patrick Stewart to wear a toupee in his audition for Star Trek: The Next Generation and then he read for a second time without the hairpiece. In the end, balder heads prevailed.

Each study was different but one had 588 participants with an average age of 44 and a mix of ethnic backgrounds. So quite a substantial study.
