Why you should pee after sex

Attractive woman in medical coat and glasses ready to answer sex related questions

Q: Is it true women should pee after having sex? Also do you have to do it straight away? Or can you enjoy the afterglow a bit first?

Yes it’s definitely a good idea for women to go to the toilet after having sex. This is because, on the female body, the vaginal opening (and anus) is located pretty closely to the urethra and, because of all the in and out thrusting action of sex, bacteria from the anal area, and other particles can get trapped inside the urethra and can end up causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) which can be pretty annoying at best and potentially very dangerous to your health at worst. Urinating flushes out all of those little nasties and keeps the UTIs at bay.

It's not just after penetrative sex either. Because the clitoris is also located in that same area, it's recommended by most sexual health professionals to also urinate after having oral sex, vagina on vagina sex, and sex with sex toys.

As for the time limit between having sex and rushing off for a wee it doesn't necessarily have to be straight away. If you are prone to UTIs then yes, the sooner you can go the better, but if they aren't something you experience often, and you want to have a bit of a snuggle and enjoy that afterglow then that's probably not going to make too much of a difference.

Overall, while it's not a miracle cure-all, it does significant reduce the risks of getting an infection and is recommended by sexual health professionals and other experts in the sex industry.

For those wondering, no, it doesn't apply to penises as the male urethra is much longer than the female.

I always pee after sex, not bounce out of bed after, but reasonably soon. Good habit to have and no lover has ever questioned it

Wouldn't this be more relevant to men and than women?
    From my understanding,
For women after vaginal sex, the pee wouldn't be able to flush as it (pee) comes out of the urethra which is outside the vagina opening.
I usually do it to put my mine at ease hehe

It's relevant for women & men. The focus of the post was on women because it was a question received from a female member.

The male urethra is longer than the women's and therefore does not need the quick flushing out.
Sex involves movement. Movement moves bacteria from the vagina and anal area to the vulva which then gets into the urethra
So no. It is not more relevant to men. It's not about the vagina at all. It's about the urethra and its length and how fast the bacteria travels

My mum told me this one as soon as I became sexually active and it's just always stuck with me - mostly. On the times I've forgotten? I've paid dearly and pissed those razor blades 'Ifuwanndome' mentions.
I take the time to make a quick explanation to the guy and have never had it questioned.

Good for males too as evident in many animal species that urinate after sex to flush STIs.. And desert chipmunks masturbate after sex, as peeing uses too much water.

If you would genuinely like to suggest an "off topic" Q&A please use the link to submit your question but this female member's question was specifically about the urethra and the advice does apply to all genders.

Totally agree on the clean hands thing especially as bacteria lives under the finger nails and can do the same thing introducing UTIs
